Born To Be a Newspaper Man

Pets

There were two dogs in my youth. I vaguely recall the first one which must have been a Collie. I was very young at the time and the dog was quite energetic. After a short time, my Dad decided this wasn't working and he took the dog and gave it to a farmer in the area.

Marty and Springer Spaniel

In junior high school I acquired a brown and white Springer Spaniel. There is a photo hand colored showing me and the dog at the Pomme de Terre river just below our house. We let the dog run loose and that proved fatal when he was run over by a car one evening on the street below our house.

When I was married and we had our nine children there were requests for a dog. Many people who wondered why we didn't have one but I decided we had all we could handle with nine active youngsters and nobody volunteered to take care of a dog so we never had one.

I raised rabbits in the back yard when I published the National Rabbit Raiser magazine. Though the rabbits were penned they must have been scared to death by the dogs that roamed the neighborhood.

Vince once wanted a pony to be tied to a hitching post in the back yard but the children had to be content with the horses across the street at the farm of Dr. W. C. Kaufman.
